One of those Stone’s I REALLY like. Ruination IPA - Tropical Heat edition, brewed with mangos and habeneros. Not that spicy but excellent mouthfeel and oily hop flavor. 7.7% abv. (at Lucky Labrador Beer Hall)
The canon of film about the American game of baseball is justifiably long, but also varied in it’s impact. Some are silly and made for the entertainment of children, others are foolhardy for the sake of comedic relief, yet others take on a more serious or pastoral tone. 42 the biopic based on the life of baseball’s first African-American player Jackie Robinson, is unwilling to fall into any category of it’s predecessors and more than willing to affect our view of the world.
The film begins with Jackie in the minor leagues and ends with the conclusion of his first season as a member of the Brooklyn Dodgers. While it’s a shame that it ended prior to the team meeting the Yankees in the World Series (set in the days before playoffs and league championship series), had it done so, the film would have been less about Robinson and more about other black players that quickly joined the ranks of the MLB immediately following his landmark rookie season.
